Hypothesis:
Many people forget to check the lint before they run the dryer, causing them to have to rerun the dryer. I want to take this opportunity to come up with an easy fix where there is an LED indication of whether or not the dryer lint has been cleaned. The indication would be close to the “on/start” button, so if the light is lit, people can know to check it before running the load.

Interviews:
I interviewed my three roommates, a mother, and a friend.
  1. My first roommate said that she thinks this is an opportunity that can be easily solved. When I told her about my idea, she said she liked it and if there were a way I could implement an app to work with the dryer, that would be better.
  2. My second roommate did not like the idea as much, and she argued the people can still forget, but also said that we would need a way to stop being so forgetful. She also said that there is probably already an invention similar to that.
  3. My third roommate thought the idea would save a lot of time and utilities. She liked the idea and thought it wouldn’t cost a lot of money for a company to add a little LED indication.
  4. My fourth interview was with a mother, she thought that this was a good idea, but it is already done. She agrees that all drying machines should have this indication, and even the ones that already have it can use some modifications.
  5. My last interviewee was a friend from one of my classes. When I explained my idea to her, at first, she seemed doubtful, but as I explained more, she liked the idea. She said that a lint indication would be smart, considering all the time that would be saved.

Summary:

I learned a lot from these interviews. I saw this solution through other people’s aspects and understood their points of view. I did not initially know that some newer models of drying machines have indications already. With this knowledge, I probably wouldn’t continue with this entrepreneurial idea. I would instead want to modify their invention, maybe, or add an app, as one of my roommates suggested.

    Hi Deborah,
    I really like this idea of yours as I struggled today with my dryer because there was a ton of lint left in there from the previous user. An LED indicator, to me, would be super efficient and beneficial. I also did not know that newer models have this indication, but it sure is great to know! Your idea of adding an app is interesting, it would be great to know a little more of how this would work. Great job seeing this opportunity.

4A Beginning Point: After revisiting my big list, I think an opportunity exists to fix drying machines. Sometimes, when I run the dryer, I forget to clean the lint out of the dryer, which causes my clothes to be somewhat damp after the dryer buzzes. Your Exit Strategy

28A I think I plan to stay with my business until I am either comfortable financially, or ready to retire, whichever one comes first. I have selected this exit strategy because my grandparents are entrepreneurs and I am following in their footsteps. My grandparents own a chain of condos. They ran it until they were ready to retire, and they have made it into a family business because now my aunts and uncles run it and it will go to my cousins and I one day. I think this exit strategy has influenced the other decisions I have made by leading me to another contact in this industry, I know my grandparents work with a laundry company to get discounts on their bulk purchases for the condos and houses they rent out. This exit strategy has helped me realize and remember their connections that I can use as another opportunity.

Celebrating Failure

26A For New Year’s this year, I made a resolution to reach out to my friends and family more. I am normally really busy and I tend to forget to update/get updates from my loved ones. My resolution consisted of calling or face-timing my friends and family at least once a month, or bimonthly. I managed to keep my resolution up for the first month, I called one person a day and made sure to text my parents every night. Slowly, I noticed myself stop calling my loved ones, but I still wanted to catch up with them so I would send an occasional text or interact with them on social media. I guess you could say I failed at keeping up this resolution because I haven’t called any of my loved ones for a while since school has gotten more stressful.
