Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 1

12A

Segment: People who are normally busy and tend to forget to check the dryer lint.

What I learned: One of my interviewees gave me an instance a year ago when he lived on campus. He said he was busy studying for an exam at around 10 pm, so he calculated that he would need a total of 2 hours to wash and dry his laundry, and during that time, he would continue studying. He put his clothes in the washer and then transferred it to the dryer when it was done. He then left to continue studying, and when he came back, he realized he forgot to take out the lint before running the dryer, and now most of his clothes were damp. He ended up staying up for another hour and a half, which made him not get enough sleep. The interviewee said he didn’t search for a solution. He just makes sure to triple check the lint from now on. Another one of my interviewees said that she is always in a rush, and she really liked the app idea and the fact that she would be able to add more or less time to the cycles. The last person I interviewed was my friend’s mom. She actually told me that the app would be a good addition to the LED indicator because there was one time when she just moved into her house that she ran the dryer and went to do some quick errands, but there was an excess amount of lint in the catcher. When she came back from her errands, she said that her dryer caused a small fire, nobody got hurt, but she said that the LED indicator could’ve reminded her to check the lint catcher and the app could’ve sent her a warning that her dryer was overheating. She could’ve turned off the dryer while doing her errands with no stress on what is going on at home. The interviewee informed me that she searched for how come is it for dryers to burn houses down, and she learned that it is pretty common. This segment is very broad and aware of their problem, but they don’t really try to solve it, maybe because the problem is not very inconvenient.

  1. Hey Deborah,
I too have stayed up late to make sure the washer was done so I could move clothes to the dryer. However, for me I usually wait till the morning to take the clothes out of the dryer. The LED indicator would be a fantastic idea but I am not sure if I would use the app. For me the app would not be useful to me if I already have the lint LED indicator installed into the dryer.

  2. Hey Deborah Lee,
After reading over your interview summaries, it sounds like people aren't looking for this product but would be interested in getting it if they found it. While the opportunity exists people were unaware of what they could do to solve their problem and you have created a unique idea that you could expand up by making an app feature as well.
